Do Beeswax Candles Really Purify Air? Here's What the Science Says

Here is what is actually going on, and why it matters.

The Negative Ion Claim

The claim is this: when beeswax burns, it releases negative ions into the air. Negative ions are molecules that carry an extra electron. They occur naturally near waterfalls, after rainstorms, and in forests. They are also produced by certain electronic air purifiers.

The theory is that negative ions bind to positively charged particles in the air, including dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and other allergens. When these particles gain a negative charge, they become too heavy to stay airborne and fall to the ground, where they can be vacuumed or wiped away rather than breathed in.

What Does the Science Actually Say?

The research on negative ions and air quality is real, though the specific studies on beeswax candles are limited. What is well established is that negative ion generators, including certain types of burning organic matter, can reduce airborne particulate matter in enclosed spaces.

What is also well established is that paraffin candles do the opposite. They release soot and volatile organic compounds that actively degrade indoor air quality. So even if the air-purifying effect of beeswax is modest, the comparison to paraffin is not close.

Burning a beeswax candle in a room is not a substitute for an air purifier. But it is a meaningful upgrade from burning a paraffin candle, and it does not introduce the compounds that paraffin does.
